What, Why, How

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
The global issue that our group is aiming to solve is the issue of packages getting stolen from front porches by porch pirates. Usually, 1 in 4 packages are stolen, with approximately 23% of Canadians being victims of package theft. 52% of amazon customers have had their packages stolen. Statistics show that 36% more packages have been stolen since 2019. In the year 2020 alone, more than $6 billion worth of packages were stolen in the US. 70% of Canadians worry about package theft, which leads to the purchase of package insurance so that they can ensure the value of their investment.
There is also the issue of packages that are damaged from being left outside. 10% of packages are discarded due to water damage. This results in millions of dollars worth of packages being wasted per year. Not only that, but packages can also be damaged in the sunlight and heat damaged which can be a big problem depending on the type of product that you have ordered.
With our locker solution, it allows people to save their money on an item rather than paying yearly package insurance and it ensures that none of their packages will get stolen off their porches again or damaged from weather conditions.
OUR PRODUCT (SOLUTION)
For the solution of this problem, we decided to create a company and we’ve come up with an idea similar to a locker that would be attached to the a door.
To further explain, there will be a locker that is 43 inches by 17 inches and the depth is 16.5 inches. We chose these dimensions as porch pirates generally target packages that can be quickly and easily stolen. This locker is made of wood.
There is also a keypad beside this door. When shipping your package using your delivery company, there would be an option where you could put in your code for your keypad, and this would be given to the mail carrier. The mail carrier would go up to your door, put in the code, and then the door would open, allowing the delivery person to put the package into the locker.
Our locker is $115 in total. The average value of a package is $136, multiplying that by the roughly 5 stolen packages a year, the average person would be losing around $700 on packages being stolen. So you’d only be paying $115 to save more than $700 per year!
